What Is It?
This is a minimally invasive procedure performed on the painful nucleus in the disc, where material is removed through thermal energy (heat). This causes a decompression of the disc and may relieve pressure and contract collagen.

How Is It Done?
The procedure is performed under fluoroscopy. An S-shaped SpineWand is placed into the painful disc where the tear or herniation exists. Tissue will then be removed as the wand is advanced into the disc, creating a small channel. The wand is then withdrawn sealing the channel. It may be re-inserted, creating a number of channels depending on how much tissue is to be removed or decompressed. It is normal to feel your “back pain” during the procedure.

Expected Results?
On the average, patients experience approximately 70% relief of their back symptoms within 1-3 days. However, it is not unusual to experience a flare-up of your normal symptoms for 1-5 days.

How Long Does It Take?
It depends on the number of levels being treated, but the average is one hour. The patient is then recovered and observed for approximately one hour. Physical therapy is usually prescribed 1-2 months after the procedure.

Glossary:
FLUOROSCOPY – X-ray imaging of a part of the body that is displayed on a screen or monitor in the surgery center. This facilitates and assures proper placement of the needle and medication.
